09 Nov What To Wear to Your Next Geeky Movie Date Night
The Marvels movie premieres this week (Thursday) and hubs and I have a date night planned at our local dinner theater. It took us a while to return to the movie theaters after the pandemic, and then we moved to Atlanta. One thing we miss about where we used to live was standing in line with other fans for the first Thursday night showing of the latest geeky movie. We were all so excited and we often met the best people just waiting to be seated. Most of the time, there were cosplayers and fans in costume, and I even wore a casual cosplay to our last Star Wars movie. Whenever there was a scene or character that meant something to the story, we would all clap and cheer and it felt like a movie viewing party with close fan-friends.
It’s not like that here in the big city lol. Here, it’s really just a bunch of people going to see a movie because it’s the thing you do or take your kids to see. No one claps, no one chats about the fandom, no one dresses up. If I’m being honest, at least in the theaters we’ve visited, no one is very friendly at all.
But hubs and I don’t need fanfare to be the geeks we are and to enjoy each other’s company. So we go to the theater, try out the newest meal, dress in our favorite casual cosplay or TeeTurtle shirts, and enjoy the movie. Hubs will even cheer by himself if there’s a pivotal event in the movie. All in all, we enjoy our geeky movies despite the atmosphere and have even found some cool things to wear when we want to express our love for our favorite characters and fandoms.
Before we get into what to wear to your next next geeky movie date night, let’s chat briefly about who the Marvels are and what you should know before going to see the movie.
Who are the Marvels
The Marvels is an all-female superhero team consisting of Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Photon or Spectrum (Monica Rambeau), and Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan). While each one of these superheroes have their own stories and their own villains in their own right, they team up for the upcoming movie in Phase 5 of the ongoing multiverse storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, Photon (also Captain Marvel and Spectrum)/Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan (played by Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani respectively) come together for the first all-female team up, and I’ve been looking forward to this movie since I first saw the preview. Although there are many feelings around this film, I’m looking forward to a fun watch and hope others give it a chance as well despite all the too-early reviews attempting to steer us towards pre-judging a movie before we have a chance to judge it for ourselves.
I’m not even going to entertain that soap box in front of me! But I will say think for yourselves, folks. Don’t let reviewers and others with bias tell you how to feel about something. Let’s not be geek-sheep!
I won’t say much else here because we are still currently in the middle of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of the actors and other very talented cast and studio employees currently on strike, the work being covered here wouldn’t exist. *UPDATE: “The TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee voted unanimously to approve a tentative agreement with the AMPTP…[so] As of 12:01 a.m. PT [today, Thursday, November 9, 2023], the SAG-AFTRA strike is officially suspended…”*
The Marvels and the Multiverse
This movie seems to be one that requires a bit of knowledge before going in. There have been quite a lot of television series and movies before this one to consider. I’ve been keeping up with the new phase as every movie and series is released. Let me tell you – it’s a doozy! Time travel always confuses me because it’s rarely done right, but now we’re jumping through dimensions and creating new timelines. It’s like the wild wild west and anything goes. So I completely understand if you’re confused as someone just coming in. So I say watch the movies and the series as a fan who loves the characters and stories. Eventually we’ll all come to understand the murky waters that is the new Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What to watch before going to see the Marvels
As far as what to watch: I think that it’s vital for you to have at least seen the first Captain Marvel film (2019). After that, you could watch Avengers Endgame, but it isn’t vital. Then watch WandaVision, Shang-Chi (not vital), and Ms. Marvel television series. This article from the Washington Post breaks down what you need to know and watch before going to see the movie. And here is the official Marvel page telling you more about the movie as well as the movie teaser trailer.
I think that without a bit of background, you may be confused about what’s going on. But of course, this whole multiversal-time-dimension-travel-thing that Marvel is doing has me confused every time I watch something even though I’ve been watching from the beginning. So if you just want to watch this movie and then go back to catch up, you can do that, too.
Also, when I need a superhero or super-event explained to me from a fellow fan and absolutely precious host, I watch Geek Culture Explained and Comics Explained on YouTube. I just love the way Rob breaks down every (EVERY) thing you need to know about a certain topic. And his excitement for all of it is infectious.
Three places to shop for your geeky clothes
Now, let’s look at where to shop when you need to find something to wear to your next geeky movie date night.
Depending on the movie or television series, it’s easy to find clothing to show off your favorite character or fandom. I love wearing casual cosplay outfits put together from pieces in my closet to represent a fandom I love. To me it’s one of the easiest ways to say you love a character without actually saying it.
Her Universe
HerUniverse is the place to go for fangirl fashion, and I have been a ‘fan’ of Ashley Eckstein, founder, and Her Universe for years. When I say that most of my fan-fashion comes from this site and TeeTurtle, I’m not lying in the least. I’ll do a love post for some of my favorite geeky fashion sites later, but for now, let’s look at some of the adorable outfits and accessories you can find to celebrate The Marvels:
*I hate to but have to say that I’m disappointed in the lack of fan fashion representation for Monica Rambeau on Her Universe and shopDisney. After all, Disney’s Marvel Studios introduced her into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and just like all the other heroes, she should have equal representation for bookbags, jewelry, and maybe even a dress. Thank goodness that one of my all time favorite fan jewelry sites, RockLove Jewelry, offers this gorgeous necklace and ring! And, of course, you can always collect the Funko Pops. I get mine from 2nd&Charles (*affiliated).
Tee Turtle
Hubs and I love love love TeeTurtle. That’s an understatement. Over the years, I have managed to replace every uncomfortable and itchy t-shirt in my closet with the soft always-fitting TeeTurtle shirts. All of them. And Star Wars makes up at least 87 percent of my TeeTurtle collection.
Here are some shirts you can find to represent The Marvels:
ShopDisney
This site is fun for all things Disney-related fandom. Although a bit pricier, you can find some real gems on ShopDisney straight from the source.
