As a geeky introvert who has made a grand effort to create a geeky safe space to call home, it’s hard to have people I don’t know over. It’s like allowing the unknown into my home. Who are you? What do you like? What if you hate everything I love? Now you’re in my space and we’re both uncomfortable.

I’ve spent so much of my life trying to fit in and not really being myself that I have completely lost interest in all pretense. So whenever someone wants to come over who doesn’t understand the way of the geek I get a bit of anxiety at having to entertain in my safe space while not completely being myself.

Does anyone feel the same way? How do you entertain when you don’t know someone in your party?

Geeky Valentines Day

A Geeky Valentine’s Day: Five Ways to Celebrate with Your Significant Other

Let's spread the geekiness!

Hello, there! I will admit this post is a bit late – my apologies for that. I’ve been working on my shop launch and lost track of all time… Either way, it’s never too late to celebrate a fun geeky time with your partner. Am I going to use the cliche thought that you should have Valentines Day every day? Not necessarily. But I do think that when you and your partner do cool things together, that February 14th is really just another day on the calendar that you get to spend together. But for those of you who look forward to this day every year, here are five ways to celebrate a geeky Valentine’s Day.

(Originally, this post was going to be ‘three games to try with your player two this valentines day’, but I didn’t want to exclude non-gamers from this list. So I’ve included the games you should try below…)

Five Ways to Celebrate a Geeky Valentine’s Day

Geeky Movie Night

Let’s start with the obvious, shall we? A geeky movie night is always a good time. If there’s a geeky movie out in the theaters, you can plan a date night at the movies – especially if you live near a dinner theater. Today happens to be the release of the Madame Web movie. But if going out into the public V-day crowds isn’t your jam (it’s not my favorite way to spend quality time with hubs but he seems to enjoy being out with the crowd on Valentines Day :: sighs heavily in introverted annoyance :: ) then try a nice cozy movie night at home. Dim the lights, pop some popcorn and add your favorite snacks, and cuddle on the couch with your favorite geeky movie.

If you’re single, then invite some friends over for a fun screen night. Or maybe get together with other couples for a group showing.

Geeky Game Night

Am I going to begin each category with geeky? Perhaps. This is a geek-centered blog, and we’re talking about a geeky Valentine’s Day, after all! lol

We love games in this house, and that ranges from board games to video games. Let’s chat about both:

Three video games to play with your player two for a geeky Valentine’s Day

While I detest multi-player games, I really have come to enjoy playing co-op games with hubs when it’s just the two of us making our way through game challenges. He is super patient with me while I try my hardest to master the simple art of high-jumping, and the games we play are tons of fun. I don’t have to worry about potential bullies online, or being embarrassed because my skills aren’t quite up to par with more advanced gamers. It takes the pressure off and even helps us communicate through the trials. We also laugh a lot.

It Takes Two

You may have already heard of It Takes Two; but if you have yet to try it, what are you waiting for? OMG! This is the best co-op game *hands down* that I’ve played so far. It’s actually kind of like couple’s therapy without the stuffy boring office. You are literally playing as a couple that’s just about to split up. Instead, through the wish of your daughter, you and your partner get turned into small rag dolls and have to work your way through puzzles and challenges to get back to your original size. The banter is the best, the challenges are… well, challenging,… and the graphics are gorgeous.

Don’t Starve Together

What better way to test your relationship that to get dropped into a wilderness world where survival is your only option. Who cooks? Who gathers? And how will you live through the night? In Don’t Starve Together you get to build a camp and base in the wilderness while you try to overcome wild beasts, gather food to survive, and avoid the shadows in the night. It’s an adorable game with great characters and a great time to spend with your player two.

Fortnite Lego

Hear me out. This new(ish) addition to the Fortnite world is super cute and a lot more fun than I expected. You can read my full review after playing all by myself in sandbox mode, here. But there is a survival mode if that’s what you prefer, and in true Don’t Starve style, you have to survive the challenges of this Fortnite Lego world while working together. Of course, you can always build a world together in sandbox mode and avoid all the drama of enemies and death; I will leave those game setting up to you and your player two!

Three board games to play with your Valentine

For those of you who prefer board games to screen-time, I got you. Here are some of our favorites:

Sushi Go

Sushi Go is a super fun card game that we still get tons of enjoyment from. It’s a bit different in that you actually pass your hand to the next player and each of you take cards to put down to make a sushi set or dish. You get points from the cards, and of course some duds have been added to make it a bit more challenging to collect points. The images are super cute, and of course we love sushi so that helps.

*As a bonus, Sabobatage is a card game where you try to make drink sets before the other player. You don’t have to share a deck, and you can use strategic cards and moves to win. The illustrations are also super cute and this makes a good refresher after your sushi. 🙂

Small World

I consider Small World a D&D adjacent of sorts, only because you have a fantasy world with fantasy characters. There is no storytelling except the story that you make up while conquering the world. This is a fantasy world-conquering board game with trolls, fairies, and other characters who are competing to take over as many lands as possible. It makes a great game for two-players, but  group game is a lot of fun as well.

Tetra Tower

This is an unexpected game we discovered while I was browsing Instagram videos one evening. Hubs ordered it for us and I will admit to a couple of hours just trying to get the dang thing to balance. Tetra Tower is an unexpected fun time and we like to pick this up when we want to try a quick game.

Lego Build Sets

A few years ago, I surprised hubs with the Boba Fett Lego set. We sat down one Saturday non-Valentines night to put it together, and to this day it has been one of my favorite Saturday night activities we’ve done. We set up a table in the living room to spread the Legos around, turned on a Star Wars movie, popped some popcorn, grabbed some candy, and went through the build. While this is similar to putting together Ikea furniture, it’s easier on our backs and the instructions are much easier to understand.

If you can, add this to your list of date nights or geeky Valentine’s Day activities. “Do it.”

Food Wars

First things first, if you haven’t seen Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma ( ::taps foot impatiently ::) go now. It’s fine, I’ll wait…

You’re hungry now, aren’t you? In fact, what is it about anime and K-drama episodes that make me want to eat all the Asian foods? I watched Falling into Your Smile (Chinese drama – totally recommend if you love e-Sports) and for a week I made and ate rice porridge. Soooo good!

But back to Food Wars: In episode 13 I saw tamagoyaki cooked for the first time. I just had to learn how to make it so I found some videos and a recipe, and purchased the special pan. I have since perfected my technique, and although I’ll never be Soma Yukihara in the kitchen, we really do enjoy the version I make here.

Shabu at home

Another fun thing we do is make Shabu at home. We love to purchased our sushi and produce from H-mart so when they had the divided electric soup pot on sale for the holidays, we quickly tossed one in the cart and brought it home. For a lot less money, and if you’re okay with some prep time at home, you can have your own shabu party at the house. This makes for a lot less crowded and more intimate dinner for two, especially for Valentines Day.

Sushi

You could also try to make sushi at home. Learning to roll together makes a good time. I think we’re going to try Korean barbeque at home next. I’ll let you know how that works out. In fact, if you’re interested in some geeky food content on the blog, let me know in the comments below.

Poor hubs may never see the public again LOL. (I joke. Kind of.) Either way, what’s more geeky than trying to learn your favorite anime recipes? Makes for a yummy geeky Valentine’s Day, that’s for sure.

Visit a Geeky Bookstore (or Comic Book Shop)

One of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon is to walk around 2nd & Charles (our local used and geeky bookstore) and browse the manga, comic books, figurines, fan gifts, and books. Our store is nice and big, so we can get lost in there for a couple of hours. It’s a great place to find hidden gems and get ideas for new geeky home decor DIYS or cosplay ideas for our next convention.

You could make it a day with your partner and find a cute cafe or boba shop to visit afterwards.

These ideas make great ways to celebrate a geeky Valentine’s Day, but honestly you could make these fun weekend, weeknight, or date night activities. That way you don’t have to wait for a holiday that only comes around once a year to celebrate an amazing time with your partner or significant other.
