18 Jul Five Ways to Listen to Geeky Music on Spotify
Music is everything. I’ve always believed in using music to convey my mood, and the poetry behind amazing lyrics that make a song perfect. It’s safe to say that I am a lover of music and have different genres for all my different moods. Since 2017 I’ve been hanging out with Spotify and collecting songs and playlists; so now, whenever I want to listen to something, I can find it in my library. I will admit, I have quirky tastes, preferring genres that both speak to me and help to inspire my geeky lifestyle. Because music is such an important part of my geekness I wanted to share the five ways to listen to geeky music on Spotify. On this list, I will also include my current favorite geeky playlists and songs.
Don’t worry, I’ll provide the links so you can check them out if you wish, and I hope you get as much pleasure from listening to them as I do.
*I want to add here that I am not an affiliate of Spotify, nor am I sponsored in any form or fashion. I pay for a Premium account each month, which allows me ad-free access to listen to my playlists in order and without interruption.
Five Ways to Listen to Geeky Music on Spotify
Here are five ways to listen to geeky music on Spotify:
- Video Game Soundtracks
- Movie Soundtracks
- Anime Tracks
- Television Series Soundtracks
- Podcasts & Audiobooks
Bonus: Create your own unique geeky playlists
Video Game Soundtracks
I love video game soundtracks and am always super excited when the publisher releases the soundtrack to a game I love. It’s a great sidekick to my workday – with little to no vocals, providing background ambience for focus while I work.
Horizon Zero Dawn, in my opinion, has the best video game soundtrack of all time. I can’t stop listening and have collected all the soundtracks from each game into a folder in my library. Another unexpected soundtrack that I instantly fell in love with is the Spiritfarer soundtrack. I talk about this adorable game in my Games to Play When You’re Under the Weather post, and when I found the playlist I couldn’t wait to listen. I was not disappointed.
Movie Soundtracks
The soundtrack for Spiderman, Into the Spiderverse, is one of our favorites, and hubs and I love listening to this while working. The music was so appropriate for that first movie and we still can’t get enough years later. I think for now I’ll stick with this first one – the second soundtrack is literal trash and I’m so disappointed.
You can find just about any soundtrack to any movie in any fandom on Spotify. I love listening to Marvel movie soundtracks, DC movie soundtracks, and Disney movie soundtracks. Follow me to keep track of what I’m adding next.
Anime Tracks
Oh man, this is a tough category. We watch a LOT of anime, and I watch even more without hubs. I can already think of a few of my favorite anime: Black Clover, Black Butler, Overlord, and That Time I Died and Was Reincarnated as a Slime (long title, amazing anime!). But since I can’t listen to all of them at the same time, I narrowed it down to two songs and a playlist. Spy Family, Demon Slayer, and Jujutsu Kaisen are easy runners-up, though.
So, I am going to preface this first song with a statement on how much I hated this anime. I have many reasons why I just can’t. But the music… well, that’s another story. The Rumbling, by SiM for Attack on Titan is one of my favorite anime songs I’ve heard this year (2023). I can’t stop listening to this song, but I can absolutely do with never seeing the anime again.
Ironically enough, I also love Crybaby, by Official Hige Dandism for Tokyo Revengers. That anime, though? Nope. Never again. But if you must watch something to go with the song, check out their official music video.
This listener-created playlist has been my go-to for My Hero Academia Raps, and I just love listening to the character-inspired raps. It inspired me to create my own playlist with both raps and soundtrack music in order by show. Because obviously I just wanted an excuse to re-watch the series.
Now do I listen to rap on the regular? Nope. Not so much. But when combine some cleverly-written lyrics about characters I love to some ‘dope beats’, I. Am. All. In.
No, seriously, I turned into a full on fangirl when I saw some of my favorite anime rappers at MomoCon this year!
Television Shows
Arcane League of Legends blew me away when I first watched it on Netflix. And the soundtrack is just as amazing. Every song takes me back to the show, and I can’t wait for Season 2. In the meantime, I’ll listen to this.
An underrated TV show that caught us both by surprise this year was Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. OMG, it was so cute and so much fun to watch! I read the comics and give those a huge thumbs down – but the show and the official soundtrack for the show? *chef’s kiss*
Sticking with Disney+ brings us to another favorite of mine – The Owl House. Love, love love, love, love this show. Although I can’t find the official soundtrack, I found an unofficial The Owl House Epic Covers Collection album and just love listening to it while I work.
Podcasts & Audiobooks
It’s harder to listen a story or actual talking while I’m trying to write, myself, but I love a good geeky podcast or audiobook while I cook, clean, art, or workout.
I’ll admit that among my favorite listens when it comes to podcasts are true crime and fiction, but every once in a while I’ll find an awesome geeky podcast to check out. Mostly, though, I listen to Star Wars books via audiobook and I just love the production quality of the books I’ve finished. I’m still a bit new to non-fiction podcasts, but right now I am really enjoying the Wise_N_Nerdy podcast. We met Charles at DragonCon and he was just an amazing human, so I started listening to his podcast. I will definitely share more links as I listen.
Create your own unique geeky playlists.
As a bonus category, I wanted to share a couple of my original playlists. One of the things I just love about Spotify is that you can create your own playlists with your favorite songs so you can find them all in one place. I’m not a fan of my listening experience being interrupted by songs I don’t like – even if those songs are from the same album. So I can take my favorites from different albums and soundtracks, and put them into one playlist with a category that fits a mood I may be in tomorrow or next week. All of these playlists are works of art and works in progress, so you may see new songs pop up weekly. Creating personalized playlists is just another way to find your favorite geeky music on Spotify.
My Geeky Customized Playlists
I tend to identify with the villain in most stories. Unless you’re just evil for no reason – like Palpatine. Throw him in the trash. So I created a playlist called My Villain Era with songs that represent the amazingness of being a villain and how we came to be. Because villains aren’t born, darling, they’re made.
This may be cheating a bit since we already had an anime category. But as I said before, I am avillain so it’s allowed. I really don’t listen to much non-geeky music, so it’s hard for me to choose mainstream songs because I don’t keep up with what the kids are listening to these days. I do love a good 90’s-2000’s mix, though. Best. Music. You can fight me on that. Either way, I created a My Favorite Anime playlist to keep track of the music we love when we watch a new anime. If we hear something we like, then I will find it and add it to this playlist. It’s almost like a record of what we’ve watched together.
And there you have it, five ways to listen to geeky music on Spotify, and my favorite geeky playlists for this month. If you enjoyed this and want me to periodically share my geeky music favorites with you, let me know in the comments and I’ll keep them coming.
What are your favorite geek-inspired songs, soundtracks, or albums?
