As a geeky introvert who has made a grand effort to create a geeky safe space to call home, it’s hard to have people I don’t know over. It’s like allowing the unknown into my home. Who are you? What do you like? What if you hate everything I love? Now you’re in my space and we’re both uncomfortable.

I’ve spent so much of my life trying to fit in and not really being myself that I have completely lost interest in all pretense. So whenever someone wants to come over who doesn’t understand the way of the geek I get a bit of anxiety at having to entertain in my safe space while not completely being myself.

Does anyone feel the same way? How do you entertain when you don’t know someone in your party?

Geeky Holiday Decor inspired by 2023 Holiday Decorating Trends

Let's spread the geekiness!

Just like my Fall 2023 Home Decor Trends, this post started out as a ‘holiday decorating trends and how to geekify them’ post. With every post comes research – I always want to deliver relevant and relatable content to you. But as I read through articles of 2023 Holiday Decor trends from various well-known (but decidedly UN-geeky) magazines and blogs, I realized that the trends this year are all over the place. It was hard to find a common denominator between the many different ideas listed. It was then that I decided we should untrend the holidays this year and instead let it inspire some geeky holiday decor.

The interweb named many trends that are supposed to be in this year. It started with classic Christmas colors (red and green), and then named warm colors (like coppers, golds, and browns), soft neutrals (like cream and grey), moody darks (like dark green, dark brown, and black), rich jewel tones (like ruby, amethyst, and emerald) and ended at pinkmas, or a continuation of Barbiecore. I noticed that cozy is definitely in, but so is minimalist decor, kitschy maximalist decor, natural woodland decor, and European floral decor.

See? Just a bunch of different styles and preferences tossed together. It’s like 2023 wasn’t even trying.

So many Holiday Trends

Because of the vast amount of holiday trends coming from so many different places, it would be difficult to name any specific trends for this year. In fact, those named were so diverse it felt like people were just talking about their favorite decor ideas and concepts. Those aren’t necessarily trends, they’re preferences. But isn’t that what holiday decor is really all about?

In that case, wouldn’t it be easier to just say that the 2023 holiday trend is to decorate however you want? Shall I remind you of one of my favorite quotes from Jin Mori from the God of High School anime?

“My family has a saying… Do what you want.”

I’d like to apply that to this year’s holiday decor inspiration.

So instead of telling you how you should decorate your home for the holidays, I’m going to share some visual ideas to inspire you to create your own geeky holiday home decor concept. Whether you’re inspired by your favorite anime, movie, or comic, your home decor should be what you want it to be.

“In a world full of rules and trends, your home (and holiday) decor should reflect your personality, your preferences, and the things you love.” …this Geek Girl (me).

And don’t get me wrong – I have nothing against trends. I actually love going to Michaels and walking around to see what the next big holiday thing is. But I won’t purchase new things every year in order to follow trends. At least no anymore…

Don’t ask. It was a long, dark journey to get here.

I have chosen three holiday trends I found and combine them into popular fandoms to geekify for this post. Hopefully, this will help you find new ways to think about how to combine your geeky lifestyle with your holiday decor.

What is Geekify, anyway?

Geekify refers to the act of making something geeky or geekier. It’s basically a person who has a unique talent for making ordinary things geeky. On this blog, we find amazing geeky products to wear or for our home decor, but more in the sense of “if you know, you know”. A bit more subtle so that if someone isn’t a geek they can still appreciate our home decor or new outfit. It’s just another way to define what living your geek really means, even as you navigate the real world.

When you see the geeky holiday decor ideas below, you’ll notice that the decor is not literal. I am using well-known colors, shapes, and concepts to create an inspired look. The images are meant to help you think outside the box and encourage you to create your own geeky holiday decorating ideas based on some of my favorite or more popular fandoms.

Cozy Gamer Inspired Geeky Holiday Decor

You’ve seen those amazingly aesthetic cozy gamer desk setups on Instagram and Pinterest. In fact, you may have that kind of setup. Well what if you took that same aesthetic and applied it to your holiday home decor. And this may be the least “geeky” inspiration board of this post, but cozy gaming is so in and the warmth of this aesthetic brings a sense of mindfulness and self-care – things that should be associated with a restful cozy holiday.

The 2023 holiday trends that I combined to create the inspiration for this board are:

  • natural elements
  • gingerbread
  • classic cozy Christmas
  • soft neutrals
  • cozy and chic

When I think of a cozy gamer holiday concept, I think warm, warm, and warm. There is not generally a specific game or character in this decor – it’s just cozy and welcoming. You can use soft white Christmas lights and candles, incorporate soft warmth in the form of blankets and knits, and decorate with lighter more neutral colors. My own semi-cozy setup is a combination of white and bamboo with pops of lighter lilac. For my office space, lighter colors help me think and write, and my favorite color has always been purple which makes me feel safe. You can go with a very neutral theme, or you can feature your favorite colors. I threw in some green for this visual because green is a very calming color. Whatever your inspiration for a cozy gamer holiday concept, make this decor as much like a warm hug as possible.

Gotham Night Inspired Geeky Holiday Decor

Everything Gotham is dark, moody, and a bit old. It may not be a city most of us would want to find ourselves in, but the inspiration for holiday decor is brilliant, nonetheless. When I think of Gotham, I think mysterious and gritty, and those abandoned warehouses and run-down buildings make me think of rustic and industrial. So that’s what I went for when looking at decor. I thought a more modern tree would be great – rather than the big fluffy trees that we’re used to. Everything in this old city seems scant and not quite at it’s best. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have an attractive looking color scheme and a minimalistic approach.

The trends I combined for this year as inspiration for this board are:

  • dark & moody
  • sparsely decorated
  • coppers, golds, and browns
  • metal
  • modern minimalist
  • muted and moody

It seems like everyone in Gotham wears some kind of mask – is anything even real? So I included some masked ornaments along with rusty bronzed bulbs, leather ornaments, and filtered white lights. The bats are extra, but with a barbed wire ribbon (no cuts and bruises included) you can throw in a nod to the huge criminal element behind Gotham bars. Top it off with a wire star tree topper and some bronzed berry sprigs and you have a very rustic-modern minimalist DC-inspired vibe.

Pokémon Inspired Geeky Holiday Decor

This was a hard choice. On one hand you have Pokémon. And then on the other had, you have Mario Bros. I was going for bright and classic for this inspired tree. This is very non-traditional while at the same time all of what we think of when we think of classic Christmas colors. I wanted it to be cheerful, charming, and exciting.

The trends I used to create this inspired board are:

  • traditional colors
  • playful whimsy
  • white Christmas tree

Red and green are definitely traditional Christmas colors and Pokémon balls are commonly red and green. Everything should be shiny and bright so I used glitter and lighted all the things. Pom-poms, a white tree, and a classic Santa-red tree skirt. Some people will say that tree skirts are out this year, but if you like tree skirts, you’ll love this one.

More Geeky Holiday Decor Ideas

I couldn’t pass up the chance to do a Vader | Sith-inspired Holiday look! The dark side was just calling to me…  This doesn’t really match any specific trend for this year, but I think a classic black tree is always in style, don’t you?
